The chiefs and people of Dixcove, a coastal village in the Ahanta West District, a district in the Western Region of South Ghana, located approximately 35 km west of the regional capital of Sekondi-Takoradi on Saturday 1st September climax their 2018 Dixcove Kundum Festival with a successful grand durbar  after about two decades of inconsistency due to the death of the late Nana Hima Dekyi XIII. After her death there were issues relating to succession so about two and half years ago,they got the rightful successor to the throne in the person of Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV.

Traditionally,you cannot organise a festival when you have some members of the royal family bereaved or when you have  lost some members of the royal family.In this effect,the Paramountcy  had to wait. They were able to   organise the funeral of their late chief last year after the enstoolment of Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIII  which paved way for the celebration of the annual Kundum Festival.

People from all walks of life ,near and afar joined the long awaited celebration of this year’s Kundum Festival.

The Kundum Festival is an annual ceremony  celebrated to thank GOD for the abundance of food at the time of the harvest period(July-September) of the area.
The festival portrays the rich culture values of the people of Dixcove located in a strategic coastline zone ,lying on the beautiful cave with breathtaking view point.

The Paramount Chief of Upper Dixcove,Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV in his speech raised the issue of education, that the education infrastructure is so poor and needs an immediate intervention,a good number of our children are still out of the classroom and rather engage in economic activities to support their homes and so on.The story however is as a matter of fact not all so gloomy,there are few who are breaking the barriers and raising their heads.These,we have to celebrate and encourage, he stressed.

The municipal hospital that serves the people of Dixcove needs some facelift to meet our status as a municipality.It is unfortunate that this hospital since it was built has not seen infrastructure development to modernise  It in line with the changing times,he said soberly.
The hospital lacks;among others ;a doctors’ bungalow,nurses’ quarters  and it’s mortuary is in such a bad shape that it has been closed down.He therefore called on government to take some very urgent steps to redeem the situation.

Praising nature,he said the land of Dixcove has a huge untapped potential to be developed into a tourism hub. According to him,it has an amazingly beautiful coastline, serene landscape, fort and a host of other things which of developed could attract tourists from all around the world to Dixcove.He then called on private business men and women to consider these prospects for the development of Dixcove.

Obrempon Hima  Dekyi XIV called on his colleague the paramount chief of the Lower Dixcove,Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX to assist him to bring sanity,unity and peace to the entire people of Dixcove, as they put their differences aside for a together Ahanta West District.

Among the  Paramount Chief of the Lower Dixcove was the President of the Western Region House of Chiefs and the Chairman of the Durbar,Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II,Member of Parliament for Ahanta West Constituency,Lawyer Ebenezer Kojo Kum,Deputy Western Regional Minister,Gifty Eugenia Kusi,CEO for Ghana National Petroleum Corporation(GNPC) and the Special Guest of Honour,Dr.KK Sarpong  graced the Occasion to give their good will message to the people of Dixcove.

The Member of Parliament for Ahanta West Constituency,Hon Lawyer  Ebenezer Kojo Kum in his good will message to the chiefs and people of Upper  Dixcove  Traditional Area said the occasion should remind as of chords of love,fellow feeling and brotherliness that existed among our forebearers.
According to him,as we re-enact the celebration of this cultural heritage,I urge you to reinvigorate the communal spirit,discipline and sustained hard work for the betterment of our people.

He also seized the opportunity and  implored the good people of Upper Dixcove Traditional Area to use the occasion to resolve to work harder for the rapid development of the community.Thus,the theme for this year’s Kundum Festival, *“Dixcove Nkoso)” meaning the “development of Dixcove”*  with immediate focus said the  test of the community’s forward march to achieving the much needed development for it’s  people,would be measured by how successfully it has been able to fully exploit it’s resources for the benefit of the people of the Traditional Area in particular and the municipality as a whole.

The legislator craved the indulgence of Nananom,to remind those in responsible positions:that is the traditional rulers,public servants,religious people and the entire citizenry to make every sacrifice necessary to uphold the principles of selfless commitment that characterized the forebears of the land.

He also stressed on the need for the two traditional council that is, Upper Dixcove and Lower Dixcove  to put their differences aside and  come together as one council to celebrate the festival together once though under the two chiefs but as one people for the sake of unity and respectable culture.

The CEO of Ghana National Petreoulem Corporation,Dr.Kofi Koduah Sarpong also urged the need for communities to eschew chieftaincy disputes and preserve our cultural heritage.
According to him,Chieftaincy has been and will continue to be a sacred institution in our culture of every generation.The special guest of honour for the occasion said the GNPC foundation has been faithful in providing scholarship for Ahanta Youth at the tertiary levels.Citing example of 20(twenty) youths from the constituency who where granted scholarships to enroll in Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) programmes at various universities in the country.He revealed that,this year,some more scholarships will be offered to students to enroll in STEM,Science Education and special education programmes.

“I encourage the youth of this Traditional Area and the constituency as a whole to apply for this scholarships.It is my hope and prayer that students will excel in their academic endeavors so they can avail themselves for this scholarships” he emphasized.

He also promised the paramount chief of Upper Dixcove that ,he would act according to his own personal capacity,GNPC’s  and  government at large to make Dixcove a better place to live in.
